The Spirit Of Africa

The Art Of Africa

Many forms and expressions in African art and mythology, are of a given social group that helped to define the traditions & culture of that group. It also contributes to its sense of identity and the ability to function namoniosly as a group. Since it is essentially through social organization that man has been able to dominate nature, art has played a vital role in helping to bind men together in social groups. It is from this point of view that the civilizing role that art serves is best defined.

Through these Textil- & Tribal-Art-works, we collected, one can explore and consider the bridge between origin, materiality and diaspora—objects of significance with “genetic codes” that move from one hand to the next, across borders and oceans, with a dynamism that is defined by our ever-shifting world. Here in the Exhibition these “useful” objects take on a new function, as individual parts of an entire chorus of voices—each possessing a unique story in its creation and journey to a new purpose, role Function and/or ownership.
